4/6/2020 Assignment- Katy Beth Boyers

I loved learning about Eugene Atget last week and wanted to choose one of his photos that I thought speaks to the essence of the place. I decided to choose this photo of his in “Versailles, Parc” in 1924 for it giving the viewer a feeling of tranquillity. While some of his photos give off a feeling of eeriness with it’s lack of people or animals in them and them being black and white, this photo is an example of tranquility or peace. The photo shows how quiet and still everything is, and you can see it in the fountain which is completely static. Personally, it reminds me of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens a bit because both of these places have this peaceful essence within them. I think Atget captured this essence of tranquility in this place very well in this photo.

For my own photo, I wanted to show a photo that I believes also captures the essence of peace and tranquility. What is a more peaceful place than the beach? This is the beach in Dauphin Island, AL just south of Mobile. I have been going here since I was a baby and I always feel at peace whenever I am there. In times where I miss the beach I can always look at a photo or listen to the crashing of the waves and feel that peace that I would feel if I was actually there. I think this photo I took captures the essence of Dauphin Island as a quiet and peaceful place.
